Summer Food Program
Our Y Day Camp, KinderCamp and Leaders-in-Training programs are part of the Summer Food Program, a federal effort to ensure all children have access to nutritious foods in the summer months. ALL campers, regardless of income or community of residence, are eligible for a FREE Summer Food Program lunch while attending our camp. Information on how to access this valuable service is part of the registration process.
Our program is made possible through a partnership with the Windham Northeast Suervisory Union. WNESU is the designated Summer Food Program host in Springfield. In that role, they prepare meals on a daily basis and deliver them to camp.
Windham Northeast Supervisory Union is committed to meeting our stringent Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) Standards ensuring that our campers are properly fueled for their busy days at camp and not being exposed to unhealthy food or drink products.
In year one (summer of 2013), we were concerned about the amount of paper, bags, plastic wrap and even styrofoam being used in the packaging of each individual meal and each component of each meal. So, we now have WNESU package most components of each meal in bulk and we then serve them family style. This has helped us significantly cut back on waste and resource-intensive packaging. Social responsibility in action.
